WHEN: Just about any time of the year is good for a trip to San Diego, but don’t expect the water to be warm in winter. It’s best to avoid summer when school’s out and thousands head to Disney California, which is just an hour and half away. September is a great time, when the temps are still warm, and kids are back in school. February, which is when we go most of the time, is pleasant-to-cool. You can do quite a bit at that time, the beaches are mostly empty, but the waters are not the warmest to swim in, but it’s never stopped us from taking a dip. Therefore, mid to late February is a great time for deals and shorter lines, and we have flown for as low as $50 RT from DFW. D & S have been to San Diego between 1.5 and 6 years and…
This post is continued from the main post on Taiwan. During our 5 day stay in the country over late November, we had the opportunity to take a day trip to the north coast, to the areas comprising Yehliu, Jiufen and Pingxi. We booked Mr. Michael Feng as our driver from OwnRides.com. Yehliu Geopark is located on the north coast of the country, and has a very unique, almost Martian, landscape, carved by the wind and sea. It is incredibly popular with tourists! For this reason, get here as soon as it opens, so you can get up close to the more well-known structures such the Queen’s Head, Fairy’s Shoe, Mushroom, Tofu and others, without having to wait in long lines or be rushed. Can be cold since it is by the sea. Though we rarely do guided tours, it was great to have Michael show us all the details that…
Oklahoma, just a couple of hours north of the Dallas/Fort Worth area, is a great getaway especially during the Fall months. Particularly when the flaky weather in Texas seems to go straight from summer to winter, with not much to see with respect to foliage. The change in leaf color is best seen around Halloween into mid November. However, check current conditions before heading out, so you’re not left disappointed! While Broken Bow seems to be the choice of most especially for those with large groups, the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, and the surrounding towns of Ardmore, Sulphur and Davis are perfect for a quick and almost unplanned getaway with your smaller unit. This is a perfect place for a 2 night stay and you can cover some of it even if you have just one day here. D & S have gone here between the ages of 3 and…
Taiwan is truly a hidden gem in Asia. While it is popular with visitors from South East Asia, it remains unknown to most countries outside the area, especially the West. But don’t let that stop you from booking a trip there, in fact it’s hidden status makes it one of the most affordable destinations at the moment. If you love food, this is where you need to go! Less than a 2 hour flight from Hong Kong, or a direct flight from Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago etc, on EVA Air and others, it doesn’t get any easier than this. G & B were almost 7 & 5 during this trip. The age was perfect, because now they were very confident about public transportation, reading all the signs, willing to try new things, and sacrificing convenience if needed. We spent about 5 days there, and honestly it wasn’t enough.…
A good Universal Travel Adapter is the #1 essential item when you are globe-trotting. This one is perfect for over 150 countries including those in Asia and Europe: When you have little kids to run after, you need your hands free, and the ebags Motherlode backpack has served us beautifully. It is light-weight, packs a ton of stuff, and has plenty of ways to keep your things organized, so you can reach for just the right things in the quickest possible time! Watch our review below: https://youtu.be/6u20ifQtXjY I thought Packing Cubes were so un-necessary, until I read the reviews and bought a set. Now, we can absolutely not live without these! Amazon has sets of different sizes and the quality is great, and it barely weighs anything: Go ahead and laugh! Why would we even travel to places where we would need an RFID Belt, right? Unfortunately, pickpocketing and theft…
Grand Cayman was our first visit to the Caribbean as a family of four. The flight from Miami to GCM is a short one at a little over an hour, and plenty of cheap deals are available. Because we booked our trip for the peak Dec-Jan holiday season, I had to start planning as early as 5 months ahead. Thanks to AA’s award travel map, booking early was a breeze. Trip duration was about 4 days in the Caymans. D & S are newly 6 & 4. TRANSPORTATION: A rental car is a great way to get around the island; we picked ours up at Avis which was across the street from the airport. We rented one of their car seats, and brought one of our own. Within minutes of arriving at the airport, we were on our way exploring Grand Cayman. STAY: We stayed at the Marriott on Seven…
Singapore was our first long distance trip as a family of four. It took about 25 hours to get there, but don’t let the travel time scare you! It was absolutely and completely worth it! I found a great deal about 5 months before the trip. A great deal these days would be something that doesn’t exceed $650 pp on a decent airline. We flew American Airlines and honestly it was pretty bad. The food and service left so much to be desired, and the aircraft itself was old. After this and another international trip to Europe on them, I swore off AA for overseas flights. Spend a little bit more or even consider flying out of a nearby city if possible. The only upside was that once we got from DFW to Tokyo, the next leg of the trip was on Japan Airlines (JAL) to Singapore. JAL is phenomenal…
